Following a close loss to Villanova, Yale hosts a currently undefeated Army. This game is close to a pick ’em at most sportsbooks, but I think the Black Knights have enough of an edge to bet them to secure their third straight victory.

Despite a slight possession advantage against Villanova, Yale’s defense allowed goals on 31.7% of their defensive possessions, which is around the 32.7% mark we saw last season. That was the ninth worst raw defensive efficiency percentage in Division I and it remains to be seen how improved this Yale defense really is. They’ll contend with an Army offense that ranks 12th in adjusted offensive efficiency excluding garbage according to Lacrosse Reference.

Army has also looked strong on defense to start the season and while Yale will be their toughest test so far, I trust Army to limit the Bulldogs offense. Villanova had a strong defensive showing in settled, even-strength situations and Army should be able to have similar success. The Black Knights are second in adjusted defensive efficiency through two games and are allowing goals on just 14.1% of defensive possessions—currently the lowest raw percentage in Division I.

This Yale offense is talented, but I think this Sean Byrne-led Black Knights defense will do enough to help Army get the win and cover. I recommend splitting a unit and betting half on Army -1.5 at +120 on Caesars and half on Army moneyline at -110 on bet365.

Picks: Army ML (0.55 unit) & Army -1.5 (0.5 unit)

Sacred Heart at Fairfield

Fairfield is a 2.5-point favorite at home, but I’m targeting the total in this game instead. It opened at 23.5, but has been bet down to as low as 21.5 at most sportsbooks. However, you can still bet this game to go Under 22.5 at -110 on bet365 and that’s where I’m looking in this Connecticut matchup.

Fairfield’s defense has been stellar through two games, ranking fourth in adjusted defensive efficiency excluding garbage time with a mark of 18.2% according to Lacrosse Reference. Both teams they’ve faced (Lehigh and Brown) aren’t the strongest offensively, but neither is Sacred Heart, who is ironically tied with Fairfield at 51st in adjusted offensive efficiency at 21.6%.

The Pioneers’ defense has been their strength and they’re not far from Fairfield in the adjusted defensive efficiency rankings, ranking ninth through two games according to Lacrosse Reference. I expect a strong defensive battle from these two teams and recommend betting this game to stay Under 22.5.

Pick: Under 22.5
