Both New York and Maryland are coming off a loss in a rematch from last year’s semifinal thriller. New York is a slight favorite and the total sits at 24.5. While their last meeting only featured 23 goals, the previous two finished with 30 and 28 goals, respectively. As for this season, both defenses held their opponents to eight goals in their season openers before allowing 16 in their following games.

Ultimately, I’m trusting the offenses to have success on Saturday. New York started to find its groove in the second half of its second game against the Cannons. I expect that to continue against a Whipsnakes defense that got picked apart by a Philadelphia offense that employs similar concepts. Michael Sowers was the main facilitator for Philly when they attacked this Maryland defense, and I expect Connor Shellenberger to assume that role on Saturday afternoon. Jeff Teat will also be heavily involved (more on him soon), yet I expect his presence to be felt more both off-ball and as a dodger. The Shellenberger/Teat/Dickson line is very similar to the Sowers/McArdle/Taylor line and should have similar success against Maryland’s defense.

As for Maryland, their offense has stalled for most of their first two games, with Matt Rambo looking like a shell of himself, Rob Pannell struggling to score and the midfield struggling to replace the production of Tucker Dordevic and Mike Chanenchuk. Yet, this Whipsnakes offense is still loaded with talent and they can exploit an Atlas defense that his missing Danny Logan. Expect TJ Malone to be even more aggressive than the past two games and to create offense off the dodge and feed. I also think we’ll get a look at Matt Brandau and Aidan Carroll either at attack or invrting against short-stick defensive midfielders and Colin Heacock’s reinsertion into the lineup should also give Brad Smith some help at the midfield. Expect Maryland to also push in transition more with their defenders and two-way midfielder Adam Poitras. I trust them to do their part and push this total over. Bet Over 24.5 at -115 on BetMGM, ESPN Bet or FanDuel.

I’m also expecting Teat to have a big game as a goal scorer. Atlas always does a great job of getting Teat both short-stick matchups or open in space when they play Maryland. He thrived as an off-ball finisher all over the field when facing Maryland last season. In his three games against Maryland, he had a hat trick in one and two goals on five or more shots on goal in their other two games. He’s also recorded three or more goals in eight of his last 14 games. I expect him to find the cracks in this Whips defense again and recommend betting Jeff Teat Over 2.5 Goals at +150 on FanDuel.

I also think the Rob Pannell struggles are a bit overblown. Pannell generated some quality chances both against Utah and Philly, but was stonewalled by some excellent goalie play by Brett Dobson and Matt DeLuca. Pannell is getting his shots on net and should have plenty of opportunities with Malone drawing more attention. So, I’m betting a half unit on Rob Pannell 1st Quarter Goal Scorer at +182 on FanDuel.

Picks: Over 24.5, Jeff Teat Over 2.5 Goals, Rob Pannell 1Q Goal Scorer (0.5 unit)

Denver Outlaws at Philadelphia Waterdogs

The Waterdogs host the Outlaws in the final game of the weekend. We’ll have to wait and see who gets the start for the Outlaws, but I’d be surprised if rookie Logan McNaney doesn’t make his debut on Saturday night. Denver is as long as +125 on the moneyline and while I think they’ll manage to keep it close, I’d rather bet some Outlaws player props than take the spread.

We’ll start with Jared Bernhardt, who was held to no points in his PLL debut last week, but generated a handful of quality scoring chances. Bernhardt had three shots on goal and another shot that hit the pipe. I think he’ll get a few of his chances on Saturday to go and like the odds for his points prop. He should be able to generate scoring chances off the dodge, whether that’s from behind or the wings and his vision as a passer should also be on display. Bet Jared Bernhardt Over 1.5 Points at -138 on FanDuel.

I’m also expecting Pat Kavanagh to have success as a scorer. We’ve cashed his 1st quarter goal scorer prop at odds of +225 or greater in two straight games, but this week we’re going to bet Pat Kavanagh Over 1.5 Goals at -102 on FanDuel. Kavanagh has had seven shots in back-to-back games and all of them have been on net. He’s also had success against all of his potential defenders, Kenny Brower or Jimmy Freehill, in college and I’m banking on that success to continue in the pros.

Finally, I’m betting Logan Wisnauskas 1st Quarter Goal Scorer at +162 on FanDuel. Wisnauskas had three goals in the season opener, but was stonewalled by Blaze on his two shots last weekend. He should get some more chances on Saturday night, especially in transition with Luke Wierman drawing Philly’s Alec Stathakis at the faceoff. I’m also expecting the Bernhardt-Wisnauksas connection to show up and like the odds to bet Wiz to score in the opening period.

Picks: Pat Kavanagh Over 1.5 Goals, Jared Bernhardt Over 1.5 Points, Logan Wisnauskas 1Q Goal Scorer (0.5 unit)

2025 PLL Season Best Bets: 20-17 for +6.3 units
All bets are to win 1 unit or more (i.e. 1.2 units at -120, 1 unit at +120) unless otherwise specified.
