NLL Teams Building for the Future
The two teams in my final tier are all at least a season away from going on a serious playoff run in my opinion.
No team was hit harder this offseason than Calgary.
While Dickson and Dobbie’s return to Calgary will help an offense that struggled with consistency in 2024, the 36 and 37-year-olds can’t make up for the losses on defense and transition.
Zach Currier (traded), Shane Simpson (traded), and Jeff Cornwall (free agency) are no longer with the Roughnecks and is also likely Tyler Pace (protected player list) will miss time while waiting for a new contract. The aforementioned Del Bianco also plans to sit out the season, refusing to play on the franchise tag after publicly stating his intentions to play closer to his home in British Columbia, and is a loss I don’t think Calgary can overcome.
I don’t expect Calgary to make the playoffs and think a bottom-four finish is way more likely. Those who follow me in the Action app had the opportunity to bet Calgary to miss the playoffs at +126 when FanDuel first posted their odds. Yet, even with their odds to miss now at -122, I still think the price is right to bet the Roughnecks to miss the postseason for a second consecutive year.
Las Vegas added some offensive weapons this offseason, but their defense is severely lacking and Landon Kells hasn’t been able to take that next big step as a starter. Maybe Las Vegas will surprise people and the additions of Adam Poitras, Dan Taylor, Jonathan Donville and Kyle Killen will be anough to make up for the loss of Rob Hellyer and holes on defense. Yet, as it stands their is no reason to bet their championship odds right now and it’s too risky to bet their playoff odds even at the longest number on the board. We’re better off waiting to see how these new pieces fit and bet Las Vegas as big moneyline underdogs when the right opportuntity arises.
